A GOLFING day in Thornbury saw players take to the course to raise more than £1,400 for charity last Thursday.

The event organised by the Sodbury and Yate Business Association (SYBA) at Thornbury Golf Course was in aid of Thornbury-based charity Brain Tumour Support, with 30 people taking part.

However, this was not simply a charitable event, with participants fighting for prizes that were on offer for the likes of landing nearest the pins, the longest drive, best individual and team scores, as well as trying not to win worst shot of the day.

Carole Yearsley, who organised the event with her husband Ian, said: “It is always great fun hosting these events at Thornbury Golf Course.

We couldn’t have put it together without the help of all our volunteers and supporters, and members of the Sodbury and Yate Business Association.

“I’d like to pass on my thanks to everyone who sponsored the event, donated cakes and gave prizes for the raffle.

“We’re overwhelmed by the amount we raised on the day and we’re already planning to make next year’s event even bigger and better!”

This is the second year in a row that the golf day has been held to support the charity, which provides support and counselling for patients, their families and carers, whose lives may be affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.

Carole, whose son Ben was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010, said: “The support provided to our son and family has continued to be invaluable. It’s good to give something back so they can carry on their great work.”
