STAFF from a national charity will be hosting foot-care advice sessions in Yate for people with diabetes.

The sessions, run by Diabets UK and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), are being held in a bid to reduce the number of diabetes-related amputations.

More than 12,000 people in South Gloucestershire are living with diabetes.

Annika Palmer, South West regional head of Diabetes UK, said: “There are more than 140 diabetes-related amputations a week in England, yet up to 80 per cent could be prevented through improved foot care services and better patient knowledge.

“Preventing foot ulcers and treating them quickly if they do develop is crucial in avoiding amputation.

“This is why it is so important to know what needs to change in South Gloucestershire, where amputation rates are higher than the national average.”

The sessions will be held on Monday, July 24 at Poole Court in Yate at 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm.

Entry is free and refreshments will be provided.

Dr Jonathan Evans, South Gloucestershire CCG clinical lead for long-term conditions, said: “We are determined to bring down the rate of amputations as a result of diabetes in South Gloucestershire and to improve foot care services generally and we really want your help to do this.

“Listening to the views and experiences of people who have diabetes will be invaluable in shaping the future of diabetes foot care for people locally, so please come to one of these crucial patient engagement events.

“It is a unique opportunity to make your voice heard and to make a positive difference.”
