AN INTERNAL review has been launched at a Gloucestershire hospital and the police has referred itself for investigation after a man's body was found in a public toilet.

The body of a 32-year-old Gloucester man was discovered in a toilet near the Tower Block entrance at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital at 8.30am on Monday.

Prior to his death, the NHS trust which runs the hospital, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) had contacted Gloucestershire Constabulary with concerns about his welfare.

As a result the force has now referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for investigation.

A police spokesman said: "Following the report of a body being discovered in a toilet in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital we can confirm the body is believed to be that of a 32-year-old Gloucester man who was a patient at the hospital.

"The circumstances of the man’s death are being treated as non-suspicious and officers are continuing enquiries on behalf of the coroner.

"The death has also been referred to the IPCC due to a recent call from the hospitals trust to police reporting concern for the welfare of the man involved.

"We now await the IPCC’s decision around whether the commission will investigate the matter or refer it back to our professional standards department to investigate."

GHNHSFT has also launched an internal review into the man's death.
A trust spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a body was discovered in the public toilet of the Tower Block at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and in line with our policy Gloucestershire Constabulary was immediately informed.

“An internal investigation has been launched and we will continue to work closely with the police in their enquiries."
