A 71-year-old runner from Yate has been given a prestigious award in the House of Lords after 30 years of raising more than £250,000 for charity.

Clive Daniels who has run for various charities for more than 30 years, completing 15 marathons and 17 half marathons, and going door-to-door for sponsorship, was awarded the British Citizen Award at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament on July 6.

Along with 30 other worth winners, Clive was presented a medal recognising his efforts by TV presenter Michael Underwood and Ian Christian, a partner from one of the event sponsors, law firm Irwin Mitchell.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed an afternoon tea and an open-top bus ride around the capital.

“Finding out I had won came out of the blue, I was not expecting it at all,” said Clive, who was nominated by Macmillan Cancer Trust, who he raised £230,000 for over the past 19 years.

“Even just to be nominated made me very proud and humbled, so to win was extremely pleasing.

“The day itself was truly memorable, the kind that you would want to re-experience over and over again.

Having known he had won the award since November last year, Clive said it had been a challenge to keep the secret.

He said: “It was difficult to keep such wonderful news to myself, I was allowed to tell my close family but there were so many other people, friends and family that I wanted to share the news with.”

Mr Christian said: “The story of Clive’s amazing fundraising efforts is truly inspirational and his efforts down the years will have undoubtedly changed a huge number of lives.

“The British Citizen Awards is all about shining a spotlight on incredible individuals who otherwise may not get the attention they deserve. Clive’s selfless and caring attitude is phenomenal and it is only right that he is recognised.”

And despite hanging up his trainers last year after his supposed final race at the Bristol Half Marathon, having raiser more than a quarter of a million pounds, including £230,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Clive said that the incredible people he met at the event inspired him to race again.

“At the ceremony, I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of truly inspirational people who do some great work. Hearing what they had to say and what they had achieved put the urge to run back in my head, so despite promising I was done, I am back!”

Clive will be racing the Bristol Half Marathon on September 17.

Entries for the next round of awards, which will take place in January 2018, are now open. To nominate someone, visit www.britishcitizenawards.co.uk or call 0203 002 7764.
