STAFF at a primary school in Wotton have unveiled more than £2,000 worth of new playground equipment which encourages kids to get involved in construction and stay active outdoors.

The new ‘Dengineering Zone’ at Blue Coat Primary School, was officially opened today much to the joy of the pupils.

Blue Coat is well known for its focus on outdoor play and its attempts to incorporate new ways of learning while keeping the kids outside instead of in the classroom.

“The Dengineering Zone is a fantastic addition to Blue Coat’s play spaces,” said head teacher Mark Ryan.

“Not only will it increase opportunities for construction and active play, but it will enable children to practice crucial social skills such as team work, problem solving and negotiation, and will help to build resilience.

“This all contributes to our school vision of ‘Future Ready’ children.”

The project was made possible due to £2,055 in funding from Gloucestershire County Council and its Children’s Activity Fund.

Cllr John Cordwell (Lib, Wotton), recommended the funding allocation and cut the ribbon at today's official opening.

“I was delighted to be able to recommend allocating £2055 of County Council funding to bring about the Wild Play Area at the Blue Coat C of E Primary School,” said Cllr Cordwell.

“This is tackling sedentary lifestyles that are all too common in today’s electronic and safety conscious age.

“It is increasing activity levels, improving mental well-being, developing self-esteem and social skills and the inclusion of children of all abilities.

Cllr Cordwell stated that The Children’s Activity Fund is running again this year and he still has around £2,500 to allocate within his electoral division, details of who can apply and how are on the GCC website.

Blue Coat’s award-winning play coordinator Rachel Murray told the Gazette: “It was great fun designing the Dengineering Zone.

“The pupils led the design process and everyone cast their votes on the types of den and materials we would use to create the new area.

“The children have been very excited to see their ideas come to life.”
