MORE THAN 100 people were arrested for drink and drug driving in June across the Avon and Somerset area.

The arrests, which come as part of Avon and Somerset Police’s Operation Tonic road safety campaign, included three men from South Gloucestershire who were later charged.

As with previous campaigns, officers have named those charged as Michelle Beale, of Charlton Road, Kingswood, Jack Stefun Barry of Bourton Avenue, Patchway and Igors Serkous of Silver Birch Close, Little Stoke.

Chief inspector Kevan Rowlands, head of road safety for the force said: "The people we arrested have put lives at risk by choosing to drive with alcohol or drugs in their system.

"Some of the people arrested are clearly dealing with difficult situations in their lives.

"If you know someone who is coping by using alcohol or drugs and still driving then please reach out to them and get them to stop before they add a drink drive arrest or the trauma of a collision to their problems.

"The response of the public over the Operation Tonic period shows that the vast majority of people know this is wrong and are willing to help us bring people to justice.

"Our work doesn’t end with the Tonic campaign and we will continue to act on information received from the public to ensure that the small minority of people who continue to drive over the limit are arrested and put before the courts."

Officers have asked that if someone won’t stop driving while drunk or drugged, they should be notified before someone gets hurt, and to call 999 if they know someone is driving now whilst drunk or under the influence of drugs.

In less urgent cases, police have asked the public to report the case by dialling 101 or drinkdrive@avonandsomerset.police.uk.
