A GIN distiller based in Thornbury is celebrating the launch its new limited edition tipple, inspired by renowned engineer Isembard Kingdom Brunel.

Brunel is the latest creation by Bramley and Gage, who produce the popular 6 O’clock Gin on Thornbury’s industrial estate, with a donation from the proceeds of each of the 5,000 bottles set to benefit one of the industrialist’s greatest creations, the SS Great Britain.

Using the tagline “‘Exquisitely Engineered’, the 50 per cent ABV Brunel edition builds on the original formulation of 6 O’clock Gin with the introduction of six new botanicals – green cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, cassia bark, cubeb and lemon

“Brunel has huge appeal” said Michael Kain, Bramley & Gage’s director. “He was once voted the second greatest Briton of all time, after Winston Churchill.

“His engineering achievements are visible in our bridges, tunnels and railways around the UK and he is remembered with people, places, businesses, even a university, named after him. It was an easy choice for us as some of his most famous work is here in Bristol.

"He also standardised British time for the railways, so 6 o’clock gin-time is enjoyed by gin drinkers at the same time across the UK!”

To celebrate the launch, the SS Great Britain Trust invited Bramley and Gage to show off the Brunel edition at an event on the famous boat last Wednesday, which is dry-docked in Bristol’s floating harbour.

"We had an absolutely delightful evening at the Brunel’s SS Great Britain, sampling the Brunel Edition to the public,” said Michael.

“The response was overwhelming, and it was an honour to be able to serve our new drink on the dockside next to the magnificent ship.”

Bottles of the Brunel edition cost £43, and for every bottle sold, £1 will be donated to the SS Great Britain Trust, which will be opening the new ‘Being Brunel’ museum in February 2018
