THE WEST of England is bidding to host a logistics hub that would serve Heathrow Airport’s expansion plans.

The announcement by West of England mayor Tim Bowles could see hundreds of new jobs in the Avonmouth and Severnside Enterprise Area if successful.

Heathrow is looking for four logistics hubs in the UK to pre-assemble components for the airport’s expansion.

The components would then be delivered to site, making the £16bn project more affordable and spreading investment outside the South East.

Mr Bowles said: “The West of England is ideally placed to host a logistics hub for Heathrow.

“We are well-connected by direct road or freight links, and the Avonmouth and Severnside Enterprise Area is also served by Bristol Port.

“Our region is at the forefront of innovation, with access to a strong tech-based supply chain. We are home to globally renowned technology and environmental expertise which can help Heathrow create the world’s smartest and sustainable airport.

“We also have world-leading universities and a thriving further education sector to deliver the labour skills needed.

“The West of England has already proved its worth in being able to deliver supply chains for major UK infrastructure projects such as Hinkley and Crossrail.”

An announcement on successful bids to be shortlisted for the next stage is expected by the end of the year.
