THE third consecutive memorial match for beloved Wickwar footballer Jack Addle was held on Synwell Playing Field in Wotton.
This year’s Jack Addle Memorial Shield, which saw the Wotton Rovers Allstars face-off against Wickwar Wanderers, was won 4-3 by the home team after a stunning comeback on Saturday.
The memorial shield is held in honour of Jack (pictured below), 26, from Wickar, who passed away in 2015 after a tragic road collision, he was an avid footballer and former student at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School.
To honour his love of football, his family, friends and former teammates come together each year for a day of sport, barbecue and disco.
The teams were led out by Jack’s nephew Charlie, the official mascot.
Wickwar took the early advantage, holding a 3-0 lead for most of the match with the help of Max Minter and a brace from Kieran Spary.
Wotton staged a stunning comeback from 3-0 down thanks to a hat-trick from Josh “I’m retired” Stokes, and Jacob Symanyowski.
A blistering finish with goals in the 85th, 87th, 88th and 90th minutes secured the win for Wotton.
Their name will be engraved on the Jack Addle Memorial Shield for 2017, bringing the overall score to 2-1 Wotton.
Wotton Rovers would like to thank everyone at Wickwar Wanderers for their help and support, and all of Jack’s many friends and family for turning out in great numbers to support the event.
Chairman Zoe Taylor said: “It’s been the best year yet and really well attended. We’ve already been in touch with Jack’s family to organise next year’s event and we hope it will continue for many years to come.”
Lining up for the Wotton Rovers Allstars were: Eddie Hanbury, Paul Bleaken, Nicky Tomlin, Josh Stokes, Matt Cook, Scott Cook, Marcus Watkins, Clint Hopkins, Dave Thompson, Mike Thompson, Jason Vines, Tay Jones, TJ White, Jordan Ball, Luke Hopkins, Niall Hanbury, John-Joe Price, Jacob Symanyowski and Steve Brown.
