AN EVENING of music and song was celebrated by residents in Almondsbury to commemorate VE day, raising more than £3,000 for charity.
The sell-out event at the Almondsbury Sports and Social Club raised £3,002 for military charity Help for Heroes, with everyone in attendance entertained by the sounds of Thornbury Swing Band and close harmony ladies group, the Usherettes, ending with a traditional pub singalong around a piano led by a trio of musicians from the village.
A highlight for the organisers was raising £370 through the auction of two copies of the book – “The Last British Dambuster”, personally signed by the author, squadron leader George ‘Johnny’ Johnson, who lives in Westbury on Trym - an appropriate and fitting tribute to VE day and to all those who made it a reality.
The organising team thank everyone who came along on the evening and gave generous amounts of money in support of a fantastic cause.
They also thank all those who either donated money, their time to help with the organisation, or contributed prizes and auction lots. A great time was had by all and the team hope the money raised makes a real difference to the lives of ex-servicemen.
