CYCLISTS enjoyed a day in the sunshine at this year's Sodbury Sportive, which took place earlier this month.

Participants had the option of choosing a route for a leisurely ride, or testing themselves with longer distances and against the clock. They then toured the local area, following well-marked routes through quiet country lanes. Well stocked food stops topped up the riders' energy levels on route before returning to Chipping Sodbury Rugby club for pasties, beans and live music.

Now in its sixth year, the Sodbury Sportive draws cyclists from all over the country and even from abroad. One intrepid rider, Ben Hatherell made the trip all the way from New York to tackle the 100 mile route, before flying back home the following day.

Founded in 2012, the event has grown year on year, thanks to a hard working group of volunteers and the support of a loyal and growing group of riders.

Co-organiser Stuart Bennett said: "Last year’s event raised nearly £25,000 for Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club charities and, with even more riders this year, we hope we have raised a similar or higher figure.

"We don't know the exact figure for 2017 yet, but are expecting it to be in excess £25,000," he said.

"We will be supporting , Macmillan Cancer Support, Julian House, Horton School, Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club and Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club, all of whom helped with the running of the event. We will also be supporting many local charities and good causes through the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury."
