A YATE teenager with terminal cancer will be donning his football boots for a special soccer match this weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Kieron Hackers was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer - which affects the brain, lungs and chest - in July.

Last week, doctors at Bristol Royal Infirmary gave him the devastating news that he has between four and six months to live.

Now, the former Brimsham Green student is determined to enjoy a kickabout with his friends and family at a special youth versus seniors tournament at Chipping Sodbury Town Football Club on Saturday at 6.30pm.

The match has been organised both as a fundraiser and as a fun celebration of the teen’s life.

“Kieron eats, sleeps and breathes football,” said Diane Walters, one of the match’s organisers.

“And this match is a way of the football club doing something for one of its own.”

An avid Manchester United fan, the football-mad-teenager played for Yate United throughout his childhood, and last season joined both Chipping Sodbury Under 18s squad and Iron Acton Men’s team.

Kieron has now created a bucket list of things he wants to do in the next couple of months. It includes going up to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United and taking a family holiday in Centre Parcs. Money raised at the match will go towards making these things happen. It will also allow Kieron’s family to stop working and spend time with him, and will help support Macmillan nurses, who are currently looking after him.

Saturday’s match will see two youth teams on the pitch - Chipping Sodbury Under 18s, plus a Yate and Chipping Sodbury team made up of any under 18s who have played football with Kieron and would like to take part.

They will be playing against each other and against two senior teams, featuring managers of the Yate United and Chipping Sodbury FC youth squads.

The tournament will be followed by a party in the clubhouse featuring live music, plus a DJ and karaoke.

Everyone is welcome at both events.
