EDUCATION is one of those areas where people always think things can be done differently, but it always comes down to two things - more funding or cost cutting.

The latter is definitely behind the Castle School Education Trust’s proposal to relocate their joint sixth form in Thornbury to the Castle School’s main site and in the current economic climate, if it isn’t of use, questions should be asked as to if it should stay.

But in financial cost cutting, what else is being lost to the town?

A site that has such heritage in Thornbury, the sixth form centre has stood as an educational pillar of the town for more than a century, and should it go, all that history could be lost along with it.

This is a factor that both the trust and South Gloucestershire Council should be looking at in depth before any decision is made.

Concerns have already been raised over the town potentially losing the Armstrong Hall complex in Thornbury if it moves to Turnberrie’s and it is likely this will provoke a similar reaction.
