A 400-YEAR-OLD clock in Thornbury’s High Street is set to undergo repairs in coming months.

The Thornbury Town Clock, which was built in 1610, sits atop the building now run by Italian restaurant chain Prezzo.

Having been out of commission while the building was being refurbished for the restaurant, which recently opened, Thornbury Town Council, who hold responsibility over the clock, have said they are looking into getting it back to a working order.

The clock was paid for by local merchants and installed in the building, back when it was the town hall. Since then it has required winding every few days, a job that has previously been carried out by the owners of the building on behalf of the council.

Saying that the clock is “both very old and very unique”, a spokeswoman for Thornbury Town Council said that they have had experts come and look at the mechanisms, which they say require both servicing and repairs.

She said: “With the clock having been out of commission while building was taking place, we are now looking to get it back up and running.”
