EIGHT years after launching a technology club at a Wotton-under-Edge primary school, an engineer from the town has had a book on the subject published.

Aimed at children and put together by Caroline Alliston, 'Build It! 25 creative STEM projects for budding engineers' will be officially launched in the town next week.

With the help of a talented team, including Cam man John Harvey who acted as technical consultant, the book was produced over the course of the last year.

Her passion for the subject, which has already seen the 53-year-old produce three books, stemmed from her childhood in Sheffield with most of her family working in the field.

In the face of declining science teaching at primary school level in 2009, she started a club at Blue Coat school, teaching children about science, technology and engineering.

"When science was dropped from SATs there were a lot of complaints from parents that science wasn't really being taught in primary schools," she said.

"I felt like I was in a position to offer something extra for the school pupils and it's something which they can really get their teeth stuck into and enjoy."

Following the club's success, the former Renishaw engineer now runs workshops for pupils and teachers to promote the learning of STEM subjects in schools.

The book which features instructions on how to produce 25 varying models will be on sale at Cotswold Book Room from October 19, although the shop is already hosting a display dedicated to it.
