SOME of the green-fingered people who help to make South Gloucestershire a more pleasant place to live and visit have had their hard work recognised at the South West in Bloom awards this month.

Britain in Bloom is a horticultural campaign that began in 1964 as a way of encouraging the prettification of the UK’s towns and villages.

Over time the focus has evolved, and now the way the awards bring communities together through a shared project, whilst improving the quality of their environment, is seen as equally valuable.

The awards mentioned in this week’s pages - for Sodbury in Bloom, Lilliput Conservation Group and Frampton Cotterell’s Floral Friends - are a fantastic endorsement of the ongoing work being carried out by our unsung horticultural heroes.

Without them, none of the creativity and sheer hard work necessary to brighten up their local areas would have happened.

And all of them mention a need for new volunteers to join their ranks.

So, if you fancy transforming your area, why not join them?
