A CHARITY football match was held at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre in memory of a “one of a kind” grandfather.

Scott Matthews wanted to put on an event that would celebrate the life of his grandfather, Michael Cole, and raise money for Cancer Research UK at the same time.

Scott’s grandfather lived in Fishponds and was a life-long Bristol City fan, but was happy watching Bristol Rovers too.

"I lost my grandfather in September 2013 to cancer, which I took pretty hard,” Scott said.

“At the time of his death, I was 24 years old and had never lost anyone up to that point.

“My grandfather was very special to me and I still miss him terribly to this day.

Scott, who grew up in Yate but now lives in Bradley Stoke, decided to get some friends together for a fundraising tournament at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre.

It was a spur of the moment idea, but without much notice he managed to get 24 players and 20 spectators to come along and support the event.

“Cancer Research UK is an important charity for me, due to my grandad’s passing, and I want to raise as much as possible for them.”

The match took place on October 28.

“It was a brilliant day. The weather was perfect for it and everyone was really excited to be taking part,” he said.

“Unfortunately my team lost, but I still managed to score four out of our five goals.

“In the end we raised £280, which I’m really pleased with, especially considering it was organised at such short notice.”

Scott is now hoping to make the charity football match into an annual event, with an added family fun-day theme.
