OUTRAGED residents in Charfield have been up in arms over the “disgraceful” state a main road was left in by a housing developer.

With work on the 64-home Bellway St James Mews development well underway, vehicles have been coming and going on the site as the houses go up.

But earlier this week images showing a deluge of mud and stones scattered across Wotton Road by builders appeared online, with residents taking to social media on the Charfield Village Forum Facebook group to voice their frustration.

“This just shows what little respect these housing companies have for our little village,” said Natalie Gardiner.

Rachel Westlake said that the site was a “massive accident waiting to happen”.

Echoing the sentiment, Karen Louise Messer referred to the mess as “skid pan alley”, saying that people waiting on the pavement and passing vehicles would be likely to get sprayed with mud.

A number of villagers raised further concerns with regards to safety, namely as many children use the road when walking to Charfield Primary School or to bus stops for Castle School and KLB.

With the village’s Remembrance Day procession set to pass down the street this weekend, a number of residents said the developer should clear the mess as soon as possible.

“It’s a disgrace,” said Tony Parker, “Hope it’s all clean and tidy and swept by Sunday.

“It’s not just the mud it’s the amount of stone, so much for controlling ingress and egress.”

Mark Rosher has since reported Bellway Homes to the Health and Safety Executive as well as South Gloucestershire Council’s enforcement and StreetCare teams.

He said: “I have pointed out the mud but also the stones coming off site, which are reportedly striking pedestrians on a footway used daily by primary school children.

“This cannot be allowed to continue,” he added.

“We have Remembrance coming this very Sunday and this is the state of the road we are to process up?

“I am beyond angry now. And forget processing, do we wait for a child to lie bleeding before Bellway homes takes action?”

South Gloucestershire Council is now liaising with the developer to ensure the road outside the development is left in an appropriate condition, a council spokeswoman said, adding that they will continue to monitor the situation.

A Bellway spokeswoman said they were grateful to residents for the issue having been brought to their attention and have raised the matter with their groundwork contract, with measures being put in place to improve the condition of the road going forward.

She said: “We will be jet washing vehicles before leaving the site and will be basing a road sweeper at the development.

“To further ensure the roads are clean for the remembrance parade on Sunday, we will be stopping work at mid-day on Friday in order to concentrate on making sure the road is in a suitable condition.”
