A ZUMBATHON in Thornbury has danced its way to success after raising almost £3,000 for charity.

Pauline’s Zumba Gold, which meets twice a week in Turnberrie’s Community Centre, took on the challenge to fundraise for Cancer Research UK and Epilepsy Society on October 25, with donations collected so far having reached an incredible £2,888.22.

Both charities were chosen by the participants, having particular meaning with one of the class’ former members having died following a seizure and many having either experienced the effects of cancer themselves or through loved ones.

The special 90 minute Latin American dance fitness class, twice the length of the normal class, saw 60 ladies ranging from 55 to 82-years-old put their fitness and their rhythm to the test, having collected sponsorship from families and friends.

So many had signed up to take part that the event had to move to Thornbury Leisure Centre in order to fit everyone in.

“It was fantastic, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Pauline. “Some of the girls didn’t thing they would make it all the way through but everyone pulled together.

“They said they had never done something so fun and it was such a challenge that they felt they had achieved something by the end.

“We will definitely be doing it again and hope to see even more people taking part.”
