CRICKET enthusiasts could have a new reason to enjoy their sport in Thornbury, with practice nets and a wicket being considered for a public playing field.

The idea was put to Thornbury Town Council during their playing fields and cemetery committee last Thursday by Rockhampton Cricket Club member Rob Sherred.

He said that the sport is popular with many in the area, but while there are two thriving clubs, neither are actually in the town, with Thornbury Cricket Club based in Alveston.

Highlighting the Chantry field, which separates Gloucester Road and Church Road in Thornbury, as an ideal location for cricket facilities, with many young people already using the field to play cricket there in the summer.

At present the Chantry field contains amenities for football and rugby.

The council have now written to nearby residents, informing them that consideration is being given to installing the practice nets and a temporary wicket over the summer months.

A town council spokeswoman said: “We welcome suggestions from members of the public on how we can improve our facilities and the committee felt that Mr Sherred’s ideas had merit and were willing to explore then further.

“If there is a positive outcome to this consultation then the council can explore further how it can proceed with these ideas and raise the necessary funding to take it forward. We would urge anyone with views to take part in the consultation.”

Proposals are in a very early stage and residents are being asked to put forward their views before any decisions are made.

Any comments must be submitted before January 5, by emailing clerk@thornburytowncouncil.gov.uk, calling 01454 412103, visiting the town hall or posting to Town Hall, High Street, Thornbury, Bristol. BS35 2AR.

Feedback received will be considered at the council’s next playing fields and cemetery committee before any decisions are made and investigations are carried out into sources of funding.
