An update from our story this moring:

FIVE illegal workers have been detained following a raid at an Indian restaurant in Chipping Sodbury.

In an intelligence led operation, Immigration Enforcement officers visited Tudor Raj, Rounceval Street, Chipping Sodbury around 6.35pm yesterday (Thursday, May 17).

Immigration checks found that five men - a 36 year-old South African, three Bangladeshi nationals aged 38, 44 and 66, and a 34-year-old national from Myanmar - all had no right to work in the UK.

The 36-year-old South African was found to be working in breach of his visit visa. He was arrested and detained while steps are taken to remove him from the country.

The other four have been released, but must report to Immigration Enforcement while their cases are progressed.

The business now faces a potential financial penalty of up to £100,000 – up to £20,000 per illegal worker - unless the employer can demonstrate that appropriate right-to-work document checks were carried out, such as seeing a passport or Home Office document confirming permission to work.

Restaurant manager, Mr Hannan said: "They arrested a friend of mine who is visiting from South Africa.

"They believed he was working here, but he isn't.

"It was a routine check and the immigration team were very polite and helpful.

"The restaurant is open as usual."
