ROYAL wedding fever swept over hundreds of children as an entire school community scrapped normal lessons to celebrate Harry and Meghan’s nuptials in style.

From writing wedding invitations and penning news reports, to creating toilet paper wedding gowns and bejewelled crowns, pupils at The Manor C of E primary in Coalpit Heath threw themselves into a variety of regal activities.

Staff and children alike got into the festive spirit, all wearing red, white and blue for the special occasion on Friday, and everyone enjoyed an extended picnic lunch in the sunshine.

Amanda Flanagan, acting head, said: “One of the real highlights of the day was when all of the children spontaneously burst into a rendition of the national anthem.

“It’s important to mark national events. We wanted this to be a really wonderful day that they will always look back on and remember.

“There has been so much cross-curricular learning going on across the school. Writing wedding invitations and news reports brings the learning to life – it gives it a purpose and makes it real.”

Mrs Flanagan thanked Year 1 teacher, Lucy Cottle, for organising the event, which included games of ‘pin the tail on the corgi’ and sketching portraits of the happy couple.

She added: “Children from across the year groups worked together in their houses to make toilet paper wedding dresses for a whole school competition, and the community atmosphere has made me very proud.”

Children in Year 3 were keen to share how much fun they’d had on the day.

Polly Cannings, eight, said: “I’d give today 10 out of 10. My favourite part was being a model for the wedding dress competition.”

And Lilly Sheppard, eight, added: “It was the best day I’ve ever had in school.

"The best part was all being outside for lunch together.”

Eight-year-old Charlie Jones said: “The whole day has been fantastic. I really liked working together with the older children to make the toilet paper dress because I learned a lot from them.”
