YOUNG gymnasts from Yate are sharing the trials and tribulations of their sport with the nation, in an exciting new TV series.

Gymstars, currently being aired on CBBC, provides a glimpse behind the scenes of the lives of some of the UK’s most promising young gymnasts.

Eight members of King Edmund Gymnastics Club, which is based at Yate Leisure Centre, are featured in the show.

The club specialises in acrogymnastics, or acrobatic gymnastics, which is where gymnasts work together and perform figures consisting of acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling, set to music.

Brother and sister Kirsten Owen, 14, and Daniel Owen, 10, are amongst those taking part.

Kirsten, a pupil at Yate Academy, performs in a ‘mixed pair’ with Finn Cochrane, 16, of Kingswood.

And Daniel, who goes to Abbotswood Primary, works in a ‘men’s group’, which features four males.

Kirsten and Daniel were filmed over a period of four months.

Their mum, Lisa Owen, said: “They followed them round for so long that they became part of our lives.

“They came to the gym, round to the house, and they flew out with the gymnasts when they went on competition trips.

“They were really nice and we got to know them all well.”

The show follows Kirsten, Daniel and Finn as they travel up to Scotland for a friendly international, and sees Kirsten and Finn head to Belgium for the World Championships.

“When Kirsten was three years old, I took her along to a gym tots session,” said Lisa.

“Nikki Thorne, one of King Edmund’s coaches, spotted Kirsten’s ability and encouraged us to take her along to gymnastics sessions.

“And Daniel was born into gymnastics. I used to bring him in to watch Kirsten’s sessions in his car seat, as a baby.

"As he grew up, he started taking an interest.

“I think a lot of people who have seen the show have been quite shocked when they see what Kirsten and Daniel can do.

“When you say they do gymnastics, people tend to think of them doing a few roly polys.”

Gymstars is currently airing on CBBC, with previously screened episodes available on the BBC iPlayer.
