A mum from Frampton Cotterell is to compete in a triathlon, despite being paralysed in 2015.

Sallyanne Haigh was paralysed after a horse riding incident 3 years ago, but after the help of a rehabilitation centre near Almondsbury she will now compete in the 'Superhero Triathlon' next month.

The 44-year-old will participate in the event, described as the UK's only disability sports series for the everyday superhero, on Saturday August 18. This is after she has been attending regular rehab classes at Neurokinex Paralysis Rehabilitation Centre.

Neurokinex is a not-for-profit organisation which provides specialised neurological activity-based rehabilitation for individuals living with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and other such neuromuscular impairments.

The mum of two admits she is really excited about the upcoming event, whilst also praising the 'amazing work' that the centre has done for her.

"Taking part in the Superhero Tri is something I never imagined I’d be able to do. Training is going well though and I’m really excited to be taking part," she said.

"Neurokinex has done so much for me and this gives me a great opportunity to give back to them and support their amazing work. I’ve never done anything like this before but know that with the support of my family and friends we’ll complete the challenge.

"I’ve already seen huge improvements to straighten my back and I’m also spending a lot of time standing which is great. I’m now able to use a standing frame at home by myself which I wasn’t able to do before.

"Being able to stand with support has made a huge difference to me. I’ve now stopped taking painkillers and that’s all down to Neurokinex's exercises that I’ve been doing."

The Superhero Triathlon gives participants a choice of three distances and three ways to complete the challenges. It also promises that people with all disabilities and any special equipment can get involved.

Full support will be given and there are no cut-off times or limitations for the participants that take on the challenge.

Neurokinex centre is encouraging more people to get involved in the event. To find out more or to offer your support as a sidekick or team member on the challenges, contact kate.thornton-jones@neurokinex.org.
