THE ORGANISERS of Pilning Flower Show are asking the community for help amidst fears over this year's show.

Concerns about the weather and the loss of some regular competitors means the organisers are calling for people to sumbit enteries to the competition.

A cold spring followed by prolonged drought means growers of flowers, vegetables and fruit may struggle to find top quality entries for the show on Saturday 25th August.

Chairman Richard Edwards said: “What people must realise is that everyone has been equally affected by conditions, so their chances of winning are just the same as any year and so shouldn’t be put off.

We have also sadly lost a number of local stalwarts of the show and as a result can expect reductions in entries for; flower arranging, baking, preserves, photography and crafts.

It has been an annus horribilis for us in this regard, but we do hope we can encourage more of the younger element of the community to get involved.”

The show, now in its 49th year, is one of the longest running in the district. This year's show is being held at St Peter's School on Saturday, August 25.

As well as the displays, the afternoon features homemade refreshments, a raffle and a charity auction of produce and donated items.

The show is free to enter and open to all. Entries can be dropped off on the Friday evening or on the morning of the show before 10.45am.

Doors open to the public at 2.15pm, admission is £1 for adults 50p for OAPs and free for children.

All funds raised will go to the Severnside Wednesday Club who offer care services to the elderly in the local parishes.
