ESSENTIAL oils are produced to enhance ones wellbeing, but many are unaware of what they are and how beneficial they can be.

These oils are extracted from a plant and this concentrated oil is generally obtained through steam distillation.

The SNJ spoke to Stuart Hill who works as the assistant manager at Stroud's Sunshine Health Shop to learn more.

"Essential oils can be used in variety of ways such as in the bath, steam inhalation, for oil burners, to support the immune system and more - it must be noted that they are not to be ingested," explained Mr Hill.

"Each oil has its own purpose whether that be for relaxation or medicinal usage.

"My personal favourite, lavender oil works well to reduce stress, improve brain function and provide you with powerful antioxidants."

As well as this, Stuart went on to describe how oils such as tea tree can be a handy addition to any medicine cabinet.

"Tea tree essential oil is an anti-septic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial so it is ideal for soothing skin conditions and preventing illness," he added.

In addition, you can purchase the revered patchouli oil at the health shop, despite its drop in popularity following its hay day during the 'hippie' era.

Although it has been some somewhat overshadowed by the counter-culture of that period, patchouli has a range of health benefits.

Patchouli aids in the relief of depression, prevention of infection, stimulation of blood circulation and even works as an aphrodisiac, according to organicfacts.net.

So, if you fancy picking up any essential oils head down to Sunshine Health Shop located in Church Street, Stroud.
