Budding young golfers came from across the country to take part in a tournament in Thornbury.

Thornbury Golf Club Junior Open was contested by 43 golfers on Tuesday, August 14.

Originally going to be held in April, adverse weather conditions meant the event had to be postponed.

The competition was part of the Bristol & District Junior League Order of Merit and also a qualifier for The Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship.

Winner of Thornbury Rotary Cup for best gross score was Jack Drury, from Stratford on Avon Golf Club, with a score of 72, playing off a handicap of 1.

The best net score was achieved by Lewis Smith from Cotswold Edge Golf Club, with a net score of 64, playing off a handicap of 26.

Winner for the best girl’s gross score was Lauren Sharp from Droitwich Golf Club, with a net score of 76, playing off a handicap of 7.

Thornbury Rotary donated the cup for the overall winner, and supported the organisation of the event.

Derek Baker, President of Thornbury Rotary, said: "I am really pleased that Rotary could be part of such an important golf event.

"Encouraging youngsters to be involved is so important."
