A CHARITY that provides opportunities for disabled people to enjoy a day out of the water has appointed Dame Janet Trotter as its new patron.

Dame Janet, who has a background in education and health and for the past eight years has been Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, a role she relinquishes in October, said she was delighted to join The Willow Trust.

Dame Janet commented: “I have been on the Trust’s boats which operate on the Gloucester – Sharpness canal and it is thrilling to see so many disabled people of all ages gaining access to such a wonderful and liberating experience.”

The Willow Trust is now enjoying its 28th season and, as in previous seasons, both boats (both fully wheelchair accessible) sail every weekday, providing fun and freedom for groups of disabled and seriously ill children and adults and their carers.

It is a truly inspiring day on a beautifully tranquil stretch of water, leaving guests saying that for a whole day they have been able to put their disabilities and cares to one side.

Each year up to 7,000 guests and carers experience this glorious day of freedom and all of them do so totally free of charge.

The Willow Trust, whose guests come from all over Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties, is completely self-funding and totally dependent on the kindness of others to stay afloat.
