A mobility service in Yate is celebrating 15 years of service by holding their AGM in October.

Shopmobility, that runs out of Yate Library in the shopping centre, had their first meeting in 2003 to discuss the formation of the scheme.

The initiative then started operations in 2006 and has helped hundreds of people with mobility problems get around Yate.

Its aim is to hire out scooters to people with disabilities and mobility problems from the area so they can do their rounds in Yate Shopping Centre.

In 2015, the Gazette reported that the scheme may be in danger after it saw funding from the National Lottery cut, however since then other businesses have helped sustain it.

Recent new funding has come from Tesco's, the Sobell Trust, Local Councillors from their MAF grants scheme, Co-op Local Community Fund and the South Gloucestershire Challenge.

Vice Chairman of Shopmobility David Bell, who is also a founding Trustee since 2004, revealed his pride at the contribution it has made to people in the area.

"We are delighted with the new funding and are looking forward to the future with great confidence. We make such a positive difference to people's lives," He said.

Many users tell of how the service also helps them socially by being able to get out and about, helps with their health generally and also helps to reduce social isolation.

The centre is open on Tuesday and Friday from 9.30 am - 4 pm, and Thursday and Saturday 9.30 am - 2 pm.

Shopmobility's AGM is on the 4th October at 3pm in Yate Library.
