Two stalwarts of the Thornbury community are celebrating 60 years of marriage today.

Ray and Audrey Worsley tied the knot at St. Helen's Church, Alveston, on September 20 1958.

The couple are have been involved in almost all parts of the community over the past six decades.

They now live half a mile from the house where Ray was born, whereas Audrey moved to Alveston when she was 18 months old.

The couple met in 1955 outside the old Thornbury Picture House. Ray had just returned to Thornbury after spending two years in Malaya on National Service.

He recalls turning up in his 1934 Austin 7 Saloon.

"I just asked if she wanted a lift home and we went on from there," he said.

Ray has been heavily involved with Thornbury Town Football Club, having served as manager, chairman and president at various times. He is now a life-member.

The pair have also represented Olveston and District Bowling Club, Ray as club president and Audrey as ladies chairman, and are still bowling now.

They are both keen gardeners and Ray has judged a number of flower shows in recent years.

Ray set up his own gardening business after working for Rolls Royce for much of his career.

The couple have raised large amounts for charity over the years, supporting Cancer Research and various other organisations.

Ray, 84, said: "We have tried to take an active role in life. We have both thoroughly enjoyed it.

"We have taken a lot out and we have tried to put something back in.

"I think keeping active both in mind and body has helped us both along the way."

In 2014 Ray underwent open heart surgery, spending several weeks in hospital.

Audrey, 80, said: "I have had him for another four years so you can see why this day is so very special."

The couple have two sons, Steven and Paul, as well as three grandchildren.

They will all be celebrating the diamond wedding anniversary at a family lunch on Sunday.
