Running alongside the Tunnel House pub at Coates are the remains of the Severn / Thames Canal that passes under land to the Daneway at Sapperton.
With a length of 3,817 yards (3,490 m), it was the longest canal tunnel, and the longest tunnel of any kind, in England from 1789 to 1811.
It was last renovated in 1976 and 1989.
