TOP marks have been awarded to South Gloucestershire's smallest school by Ofsted inspectors.

High praise was heaped on Horton Primary School in its latest Ofsted report, which called the school "outstanding".

The highest accolade was bestowed on the 40-pupil school after inspectors reported seeing "primary education at its best".

Lead inspector Christine Huard said: "This is an outstanding school. The pupils receive an excellent education in an exciting and inspirational learning environment.

"Being a small school in no way limits the opportunities available for its pupils."

Inspectors particularly praised headteacher Esme Sanders.

"The school's success is largely due to the dynamism and dedication of the headteacher," added Ms Huard.

"She provides very clear direction and has exceptionally high expectations for the pupils."

Staff, governors and parents were all said to work together to provide a positive approach to education.

Inspectors said teachers were enthusiastic and pupils wanted to come to school.

Ms Huard said: "Lessons and learning are exciting. Teachers have excellent subject knowledge, are confident and use resources such as interactive whiteboards to make lessons interesting and explanations clearer for the pupils.

"Pupils are well motivated. They bubble with enthusiasm and are lively and responsive in class."

They were complimented for producing an "excellent" school newspaper and for the fundraising the school takes part in.

A conservation area which children help maintain was said to provide pupils with an awareness of nature and standards in most subjects were found to be above average.

Mrs Sanders said: "We are all delighted that the Ofsted process has confirmed the widely held view that the school is a very special place.

"We have a great team of staff, governors and parents, who work so well together to provide a rich and varied curriculum for the children."
