MOTORISTS braved severe weather this morning as more than 25mm of rain fell in some places.

More rain is expected during the day, bringing with it a risk of flooding.

The Environment Agency has 20 flood warnings and 111 flood watches in place across the country. Many of these have remained in place since last Friday when flash flooding brought roads and railways to a standstill.

Gloucestershire County Council Highways have gully emptiers, jetting machines and standby teams on call that are available to deal with problems as and when they arise.

Gloucestershire Police have also reminded motorists to take extra care on the roads today.

Drivers are being told to travel at a speed appropriate to the road conditions, and to allow extra time for completing their journey.

Gloucestershire residents should listen to local radio stations for information about the weather and for any school closures or check the county council website at, www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/schoolclosures.

Anyone who spots a problem on the road can call the Gloucestershire Highways hotline 0800 514514 and in an emergency 999.

The county council's emergency social care line is 01452 614194.

* Test the brakes of the car if it has been absolutely necessary to drive through standing water.

* Keep the wipers on and de-mist at all times.

* Ensure you have plenty of fuel, fill up a hot flask and take plenty of water, a blanket, torch and shovel if making an absolutely essential long journey.
