Residents across Yate and Chipping Sodbury had surprise visitors last night after a herd of cows escaped from a local field and roamed the streets.

Locals captured videos and pictures of the large herd of cows as they ran through the streets of the towns including making their way up Chipping Sodbury High Street and to the Tern Inn.

Police were deployed to rescue the animals and local farmers arrived to capture and return the cows to the Common.

The rescue operation took over two hours as the cows ran loose across the area, apparently causing damage to cars and gardens.

Avon and Somerset police said: "We received several phone calls from members of the public from 8.25pm last night reporting cows were loose in various parts of Chipping Sodbury.

"Officers attended and worked with the farmer to herd the cows to safe locations from where the animals could be collected.

"The police presence in the area was reduced once the cows had been secured at about 10.50pm. No further calls were received in relation to this incident after that time."

A video shared here by amateur photographer Steven Burden has racked up thousands of views on Facebook.
