SPORTS enthusiasts cut the ribbon to a new and exciting era for Yate Outdoor Sports Complex.

Aspiring sports stars gathered to celebrate the opening of new facilities at the sports complex, behind Brimsham Green School.

The complex now boasts a new indoor sports hall, refurbished all weather pitch, improved athletics facilities and a dance studio.

The facilities are open to Brimsham Green School and community clubs including the Yate and District Athletic Club, which recently won English Athletics South West Club of the Year.

It is mainly funded by South Gloucestershire Council plus contributions from Brimsham Green School, Yate Town Council, Dodington Parish Council and Iron Acton Parish Council.

South Gloucestershire Council vice-chairman Cllr Brian Freeguard led the celebrations.

He said: "Yate Outdoor Sports Complex is an impressive sporting complex and has proved to be very popular with users."

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: "The complex is an excellent facility and is part of South Gloucestershire Council's commitment to investing in amenities that local communities and schools can use for sports and physical exercise.

"A lot of effort is going into increasing opportunities for athletes of all ages, whatever their level of performance in South Gloucestershire.

"This has been reflected in both the increased numbers taking part and a number of success stories where local athletes have gained national and international recognition.

"Developments such as YOSC are very important in encouraging people to take up sports and enabling them to reach their full potential."

South Gloucestershire Council recently won the best local authority award for its work in promoting and supporting athletics in the area.
