A WOTTON-under-Edge based firm is opening its doors to the engineers of tomorrow.

Renishaw, with its head office at New Mills, wants to develop links between itself and local schools in an attempt to highlight the many career opportunities available within the manufacturing industry.

Chris Pockett, Renishaw's spokesman, said: "Despite popular belief, the UK is actually the sixth largest manufacturing economy in the world and directly employs over 11 per cent of the UK's workforce.

"It is important that this success is communicated so that manufacturing is seen as a positive choice of career alongside finance, IT, media and the arts.

"Renishaw welcomes the chance to put the record straight about employment within manufacturing. As an 'end-to-end' business, we are able to offer attractive career opportunities to younger people in areas as diverse as research, engineering, IT, and marketing, and this year as well as recruiting 10 apprentices, will also offer around 70 placements for undergraduates."

The scheme is part of a government initiative called Education Business Partnerships (EBP).

Renishaw recently took part in a Teach the Teacher day at the MACH exhibition in Birmingham, the country's largest show for manufacturing industry.

Teachers were invited to hear first-hand from young people working within manufacturing. Staff also gave demonstrations to teachers on the company's range of precision measurement equipment.

Teachers interested in viewing Renishaw's facilities are asked to contact Philip Williams on 01453 524111, or by email on philip.williams@renishaw.com.
