VALUABLE culinary life skills are due to be passed on to the younger generation at a series of cooking classes being launched this month.

Youth engagement specialists The Door will be running 12 weekly sessions - aimed at young people aged between 11 and 17 years-old - focusing on cooking, nutrition and budgeting.

Known as the Monday Munch Club, the classes will highlight and celebrate cooking opportunities falling within the 12- weeks, such as Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Shrove Tuesday, Ramadan, Passover and Easter.

The sessions will develop basic cooking skills, nutritional awareness and budgeting understanding as well as providing general wellbeing advice and encouraging and supporting a healthy mindset about food.

Noah, a youth worker with The Door, said different foods and recipes would be explored at the classes.

He said: “It’s really exciting and a great chance to be able to teach young people some invaluable life skills around cooking, food and nutrition.

“And who knows, maybe even invoke a passion in some.”

Organised by Cam Parish Council and the sessions are funded by taste and nutrition experts Kerry Foods who are based at Draycott Mills in Cam.

Jon Fulcher, chair of Cam Parish Council, said the project was bringing together different bodies who wanted to help address current issues affecting young people.

He said: “In these current times of a cost-of-living, cuts threatened to public services, including youth engagement, and an acknowledgement that many young people are no longer growing up with some of the basic life skills, it is good to know a local company and Cam Parish Council are bucking the trend.”

The classes will take place from 3.30pm to 5.30pm every Monday from January 9 at Cam Youth and Community Centre, Woodfield,
