A dog had a miracle escape after plunging 30 feet down a quarry.

Firefighters were called out to Yate Quarry on Friday, April 14 after a nine-month-old springer spaniel fell into the quarry.

With assistance from Avon & Somerset Police's drone squad, a firefighter was able to winch themselves down the side of the steep quarry and rescue the stranded black and white puppy named Nelli.

Footage captured from the drone shows the pup perched precariously on a steep ledge - where it had fallen while on an evening walk with its owners.

A photo of the scene shows how Nelli had fallen at least 30 feet - forcing firefighters to use a large winching system.

Thankfully the dog only suffered minor injuries with a broken leg.

A stretch of Wickwar Road between Peg Hill and Chipping Sodbury Quarry was closed while work was carried out - but was eventually reopened.

Avon & Somerset Police's drone squad posted a video of the incident on social media, writing: "An @AFRSTemple firefighter gets down to the spaniel, look at that tail wagging.

"Afterwards a quick trip to the vets diagnoses a broken leg, its home to start the recovery. wishing the little pup a swift recovery."

A spokesperson for Yate Firefighters added: “You may have seen that part of the Wickwar Road between Peg Hill and Chipping Sodbury Quarry was closed on Friday evening.

“Crews from Yate, Temple and Southmead were in attendance, where a rope rescue was undertaken to rescue stranded Nelli.

“We are glad to report that despite a few cuts and bruises, both Neilli and her owners are at home and resting up. Great work from all involved.”
