A SCHOOL in Wotton-under-Edge is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors said it was "outstanding or good in all areas".

Overall effectiveness at The British School, which has 155 pupils on its roll, was judged as good.

According to the inspection team "pupils are rightly proud of their school and thoroughly enjoy their learning. they behave exceptionally well and work hard."

In the Foundation stage, inspectors pointed out that "the Foundation Stage Leader is very effective in promoting children's rapid progress and identifying what they need to learn next.

"The curriculum is exceptionally good and creates enthusiasm for learning Excellent provision means that children make very rapid gains."

The inspectors also commended the personal development and well-being of children at the school, adding: "Outstanding pastoral support and effective academic support help pupils to make good progress."

Their report said the pupils were "exceptionally well aware of the importance of a healthy diet and exercise".

In a letter sent to pupils with the report, the inspectors noted strengths in the curriculum, "which helps to make the work you do interesting and exciting".

The onspectors also thanked the children for the "friendly and open way in which you talked to us in discussions, in lessons, and around the school".

Summing up, the inspectors also particularly praised the headteacher for providing "good leadership and a clear direction for the future development of the school he is supported effectively by a governing body that fulfils its role and provides good challenge and support".

Paul Hiatt, headteacher at the school, said: "I am so pleased. The report reflects the exceptional children and staff we have at the school and the positive relationships that exist here.

"What's particularly satisfying is that there is praise both for the education we provide and for the personal development and sense of well-being that our pupils clearly have."
