PLANS have been submitted to build a new spectator football stand in Thornbury.

Thornbury Town Football Club has put forward plans to install a new covered standing stand alongside its football pitch in Mundy Playing Fields.

According to a planning application submitted to South Gloucestershire Council, the proposed area would accommodate 100 spectators.

To comply with FA rules, the club says it must build a new area to increase its covered capacity to 200 spectators.

The club says in planning documents the stand needs to be built by March 31, 2024 or it could face "automatic relegation".

The club's men's first team currently play in the Hellenic League Premier Division following two promotions from the Gloucestershire County League.

The 2023/24 season is the club's third consecutive season in the division - the highest level the Thorns has played at in its history.

The proposed stand is part of the club's wider scheme of improvements at its site.

It has already made other upgrades, such as its two 50-seater spectator stands, sheltered dugouts, an enclosure around the grounds, and floodlights for winter evening matches.

The club is also currently redeveloping its existing clubhouse which has seen the original footprint double in size.

The club say they are also planning to replace its current pitch railings with new perimeter pitch fencing.

A planning document reads: "The club's facilities at the Mundy Playing Fields need upgrading and improving.

"The proposed erection of this 100-capacity covered stand is essential for the club to remain in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

"The stand is required by FA regulations and failure to provide it could result in the club being punished.

"The stand is of modest height, scale and size and constitutes appropriate development in the Green Belt."
