PARISHIONERS in Thornbury have been told that more decisions need to be made concerning the reordering of St Mary's Church.

On Saturday more than 30 churchgoers attended special meetings held at the 12th century parish church to discuss the reordering process so far.

During the last two months St Mary's Parochial Church Council has consulted on the introduction of a new fellowship area and a mezzanine floor to the back of the church.

The plans, which will cost an estimated £850,000, have caused some controversy in Thornbury because the Victorian wooden pews will have to be removed.

Rev David Primrose, vicar at St Mary's Church, said: "The first part of the presentation on Saturday tracked the consultation process from 2004 to the present, showing how different people were involved at different stages.

"The second part of the presentation concentrated on the proposals for the west end, with a fellowship area and a mezzanine floor.

"It was the mezzanine floor which attracted particular attention, as well as the prospect of funding the entire scheme in our current economic climate."

However, as well as updating people Mr Primrose said the public meetings also allowed church leaders to tell parishioners in more detail about the next stage of consultation, which will begin in the New Year.

Further ideas for St Mary's include creating a chapel area for smaller services and enhancing the church's organ.

In January the Parochial Church Council will be decide on options for the Chancel, which will be on display from January 18.

In February the Parochial Church Council will be considering the organ and the Chancel Arch, with plans on display from February 15, and in March the flooring and the heating will be looked at, with plans on display from March 15.
