MORE than £1million of public money is to be spent on improving play areas in South Gloucestershire.

A total of 24 playgrounds will be created or enhanced across the district, after South Gloucestershire Council successfully bid for £1.1million of funding from central government.

The play areas to be developed include Townwell play area in Cromhall, Wickwar playing fields, Woodchester Park in Dodington, St Aldams Drive in Pucklechurch and Brimsham Park in Yate.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: "Our plans will benefit communities’ right across South Gloucestershire and provide our children and young people with exciting places to enjoy long in to the future.

"A key feature of the vision is a desire for people in local areas to think more about play and for children and their parents to be involved in the design of these spaces and help to decide what is right for their community."

The council has already consulted residents in Wickwar and Pucklechurch and is asking more people to come forward with their views on how the money should be spent. Further consultation events are planned but for more information about any of the schemes call 01454 865876 or email playbuilder@southglos.gov.uk
