Dancing your way to a healthy life in Cam

DANCING is proving to be the medicine of choice for some patients in the district.

Residents in and around Cam are enjoying a new way to improve their health with a new initiative launched by Stroud District Council.

Thomas Melendez of ‘Salsa Del Sol’ has joined forces with the council and World Jungle to encourage residents to ‘strut their stuff’ Latino-style each week at Cam Memorial Hall, where the ‘Dance on Prescription’ classes are being offered at a heavily reduced cost to referred patients during the pilot year.

Jill Jones, 74, said: "I joined the scheme to improve my health and because I love any type of dancing. I feel more and more motivated and enjoy every session. I’m already feeling the benefits in my fitness and health."

She added: "The classes are all about making good friends, having great laughs and keeping fit at the same time."

Doctors can refer their patients to the dancing classes if they feel it would be of benefit to their health.

There is a wealth of research supporting the benefits of regular dancing for people’s health. This includes lower blood pressure, improved mental health, increased suppleness, weight control and reduced risk of osteoporosis.

Gina Humphris, physical activity referral coordinator for Stroud District Council, said: "This innovative project offers patients of any age and ability an alternative to conventional forms of exercise; what better way to improve your health than by moving to music, meeting friends and having fun."

The second beginners’ course for referred patients is due to get underway on September 9. Weekly classes begin at 6.30pm. For those who are more familiar with Salsa, a new intermediate session will also be running every Wednesday from 7.30pm which is open to all.

Priority for places on the next beginners' course will be given to those patients living within the Berkeley Vale area. For more information visit your GP or nurse or contact Gina Humphris at Stroud District Council on 01453 754505.
