PILNING is preparing to look its blooming best as the village flower show celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Organisers of the Pilning Flower Show, which has been a popular feature in the local horticultural calendar for four decades, are pulling out all the stops to make the ruby anniversary a year to remember.

Richard Edwards, from the Pilning Flower Show Committee, said: "The flower show has been running now for 40 years consecutively and to celebrate that fact there are several categories that have been tweaked especially. The flower arranging category has a ruby anniversary theme so we are expecting lots of red flowers."

The show, which is being held in the Trinity Hall in Pilning, has more than 70 categories for people to enter their flowers, vegetables, home-made cakes and preserves and there are also a number of categories especially for the younger green fingered enthusiasts in the area.

"The best thing about the flower show and what makes it so popular is that it is for everyone. Anyone in the area can join in and enter and it always brings the community together," said Mr Edwards.

After the judging all the produce not collected will be raffled off and this year BBC regional radio presenter Trevor Fry will leading the auction.

Every year the Pilnng Flower Show donates its proceeds to a local charity and this year money raised will be given to the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA).

"Before every show the committee has to decide where the money is going to go, we sometimes ask for suggestions from the community and this year we have chosen SARA.

"Crew members from SARA will be there on the day with a rescue boat and LandRover and will help give out the prizes," said Mr Edwards.

The 40th Pilning Flower Show is being held at the Trinity Hall on Saturday, August 29.

Doors open at 2.15pm but entries to the show must be made by 10.45am.
