YATE Library has opened its doors to the public following a £1.5million revamp.

The new and improved library, on West Walk, was unveiled to book lovers this morning after undergoing a complete transformation.

The building, which had never previously been refurbished since it was constructed in 1971, has been extended and modernised to make way for a bright, open-plan bookshop style library.

The project saw the old library close a year ago and was funded by the National Lottery and £15,000 of cash from South Gloucestershire Council.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities at South Gloucestershire Council, said: "Since the library was built in 1971 there has been a transformation in public library services with libraries now providing a far wider range of services. During that time the population served by Yate Library has doubled."

Children from St Paul’s Nursery School in Yate joined members of the library management committee 3D to mark the official opening of the new facility this morning.

Cheryl Kirby, chairman of the committee, said: "We would like to thank the people of Yate for being so patient during the construction period during which time we have only been able to provide a very limited service. I am sure that everyone will be impressed when they see the new library.

"The project will not only increase the capacity of the building but also develop the ways in which the library service engages with the local community to make the library a key part of the Yate town centre."

The library features a huge range in stock, self-service terminals, a new children’s area and teenage section, more computers and community rooms.

Cllr Ian Blair, mayor of Yate said: "On behalf of the residents of Yate I welcome the newly improved and completely refurbished library facility in Yate.

"This is a real asset to the town and surrounding areas. Ideas and comments have come from a wide range of people which has made sure that the library is more that just a bookstore. It will be part of the fabric that makes and shapes a community; a place for sharing, learning and growing together and reading."
