Viewers enjoy 3D experience at Wotton Electric Picture House

THE AUDIENCE at Wotton Electric Picture House could barely believe their eyes last weekend.

For the first time, the small community-run cinema showed a film in glorious 3D, enabling viewers to get the big-screen experience in a small town environment.

The first film shown, ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,’ was a children’s animated film that also appealed to the many adults in the audience.

It is the story of how a young inventor on a small island builds a machine that changes water in the clouds into whatever food he wants. When the machine eventually malfunctions, it’s more than meatballs that are falling from the sky.

"It was fantastic", said Janet Walshe, who helps to run the cinema.

"We had a full house and the response was everything we could have hoped for and more.

"Everyone from families with tiny children to single adults came along and they all said how amazing the experience was. One of our customers pointed out that this is one of only three cinemas in the country to have this system – and of course they are right. It is so nice to have people take such an interest.

"Naturally as this was the first time we had ever shown a 3D film there are is still a little bit of tweaking to do, but on the whole it worked really well. We have now booked other 3D films such as Toy Story and A Christmas Carol, which we are hoping will also pull in the crowds."

The Electric Picture House is celebrating its fourth anniversary in November and is encouraging people to come along on its open day to find out more.

"It makes a difference to so many people because it is both nearer and cheaper than the multiplex," added Janet.

"The figures are incredible – we have had 60,000 visitors to 600 shows of 460 films."

The cinema will be open to the public on Saturday, November 7 from 10am to 2pm, with tours by some of the volunteers and a demonstration of how the 3D film system works every 15minutes.
