Yate home to new oral surgeon

A DENTIST in Yate has become the first in the greater Bristol area to offer patients surgery without having to go to hospital.

Alexander Greig (CORR) will carry out minor oral surgery on patients at the Apple Dental Practice, on Wellington Road, in a pioneering new initiative aimed at reducing the number of people who have to go to hospital for treatment.

The service will be available to all dental patients in South Gloucestershire as their own dentist will refer them to the practice.

Mr Greig, a dentist with many years experience in hospital oral surgery and holds a post-graduate diploma in conscious sedation, is able to offer the service because of his extra training.

He said: "The service will enable patients who require routine oral surgery procedures such as the removal of some wisdom teeth or teeth with problematic roots, to be treated in a dental practice rather than referred to hospital.

"Dentists can now refer patients who need minor oral surgery to the new service rather than to a hospital.

"This new service is likely to be far more convenient for South Gloucestershire patients. It will be closer to home, is likely to be easier to get to and will have the added benefit of free parking."

Roger Pedley, director of primary and community care for NHS South Gloucestershire, said: "This is an exciting new service that will mean South Gloucestershire patients have an additional service on their doorstep.

"It is another example of how we are developing services closer to where patients live and aiming to make our patients’ experiences of care as good as they can be."

Any member of the public who is looking for an NHS dentist should ring the helpline on 0845 120 6680 to find their nearest NHS dentist.
