COMPETITORS in the Dursley Pancake Race had a flipping good time on Shrove Tuesday.
The annual event was revived this year after it was cancelled in 2009 because the Dursley Chamber of Trade who organised it had folded.
This year Dursley Town Council organised the race to bring some cheer to the town – and cheer the crowds certainly did.
Fifteen competitors took part, flipping their way from one end of Parsonage Street to the other in a race of both speed and hand-eye coordination.
Local funeral directors Philip Ford and Son almost swept the board, taking both first and second place. Duncan Mason, who came first and Dave Pullin, a former winner who took second, both work in the branch in Silver Street.
But taking third place was Gazette reporter Claire Marshall, who put in a good 10 minutes of training during the morning – flipping her pancake to practise.
"The race was a lot of fun and plenty of people turned out to cheer, which made it a great community event," said Claire.
Mayor of Dursley Jane Ball, who presented the awards, said: "It was a great event, everyone had a lot of fun and it was all in aid of a good cause."
Money from entrance fees and additional sponsorship will go to the Disaster Emergency Committee for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
The winner walked away with a trophy and the runners-up got medals all donated by CGA Awards, also known as Classy Class, in Long Street.
