VISITORS have the chance to enjoy the first of the region’s gardens open to the public under the National Gardens Scheme this year.
Under the watchful eye of head gardener Rod Sayers, the tranquil walled garden of the Jenner Museum in Berkeley is kept in peak condition all year round.
However, as only the staff at Dr Edward Jenner’s former home are usually able to enjoy the joys of early spring in the Chantry gardens, they decided it was time to let other garden enthusiasts in before the museum fully opens to the public in April.
Although staff are hoping that the snowdrops and primroses will last until the weekend, avid plantsmen will find plenty of interest throughout the garden, which is just under an acre in size, including box, yew, spotted laurel, ivy, holly, wild garlic and the squirrels’ favourite bladdernut tree.
Rod the gardener will be on hand to answer questions throughout the day, and plants grown from cuttings taken on site will also be on sale. Teas, coffees and light refreshments will be available, and there will be a children’s plant trail and craft activities.
The garden will open from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, February 28. Entry £2.50 for adults, children free.
