Volunteers are needed to help disabled adults at Dursley Open Door Club

ENTHUSIASTIC volunteers are being sought for a rewarding role helping disabled adults.

More helpers are needed at the Dursley Open Door Club, a weekly social club for adults with learning and physical disabilities.

It was launched nearly 30 years ago by a local doctor with the aim of giving an evening’s respite to carers.

It was then continued by Dursley resident Charles Jukes MBE and his wife Jean and it steadily grew in popularity.

In fact it is now so popular that most members never want to leave and there is now a growing number of people in the club with not enough volunteers to look after them all.

Kylie Taylor is one of a few younger volunteers at the club who wants to urge others to give up their time to help out.

"Personally I really enjoy volunteering at the club as the members are a breath of fresh air and we have lots of fun doing a vast range of activities," she said.

During the meetings, held every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9pm in Dursley Tabernacle Church, the members get the chance to have a go at arts and crafts, sport, games and they also enjoy weekend trips occasionally.

Kylie, who has been a volunteer for six years, said volunteering at Open Door is a good experience for those planning to go to university or on a gap year.

"The members are so friendly and warm and fun to be around and it is rewarding helping those less fortunate that ourselves," added Kylie, 22, of Dursley.

Any volunteer would need to be CRB checked and over the age of 16, but you need no qualifications except to be enthusiastic and eager to get involved with the local community.
